Slam Up/Same Brain Tour
lyrical lulz
New York-based duo Slam Up are passing through Boston in support of their first album Same Brain. They’ve called their shtick “where poetry meets comedy,” and that’s a pretty no-nonsense description for a high-nonsense genderfunk cabaret outfit. Take for example (but not the only example) “Louis C.K.” — a quick ditty that likens the namesake comedian to a philosopher and proclaims “I’m a lesbian / but I’d still fuck ya.”

50 Years of Rock
pipin’ hot
We may be repeating ourselves here, but we are pumped for Pipeline! At 25: 50 Years of Boston Rock, a concert series marking the 25th anniversary of WMBR’s local music-centric radio show. Kicking off this week, the retrospective, if you will, lasts for an entire month, which gives you plenty of time to bask in tunage-inspired nostalgia.

PVRPLE 2 YR ANNVRZRY
w/ michael watts!!!
Per usual, Good Life is hosting a party you should know about. This weekend’s hootenanny is the second anniversary of PVRPLE, an always bumping night of trap, trill, and crunk. Featuring sets by Michael Watts, Voltran, DJ Knife, and Amadeezy, this shindig marks year two, and it’s also kicking off their status as a monthly. If you’re a fan of gritty southern rap, this is reason to celebrate.

Boston Roller Derby
jammed up
If you don’t know much about roller derby, Cosmos, Pissahs, Horrors, and Nuts might be mistaken for merch at a Tim Burton-inspired Bait and Tackle shop. But being well-informed Hub-folk, you know these are the baddest babes on eight wheels the ones who make up Boston’s premier Women’s Flat-Track Derby Association. Familiarize yourself with the teams at the double bout and afterparty this Saturday.
Shriner’s Auditorium, 99 Fordham Rd, Wilmington. 5pm-11pm/all ages/$16, $12 students. bostonderbydames.com

BUFU End of Summer Show
the end is nigh
BUFU is an acronym for By Us For Us, and while this philosophy runs the risk of being self-serving, it avoids the pitfall because the dudes behind BUFU Records have stellar taste in music. Their end-of-summer showcase featuring Free Pizza, IAN, and Gangbang Gordon will be a testament to that. It also sets up the joke “Come for the gangbang, stay for the free pizza.”

Pussy Riot
cat fight … no, not really
The names Masha Alekhina and Nadya Tolokonnikova may not ring a bell, but these two fierce femmes are the public faces of the Russian art collective/activist group Pussy Riot that you’ve no doubt been hearing about. Following a caught-on-tape beating at the Sochi Olympics and some unjust jail time, the duo will make an appearance at Harvard to discuss their experiences and their politics. If you didn’t happen to land seats via raffle, this [forum on] revolution will be televised.
Harvard University’s Institute of Politics, 79 JFK St., Cambridge. 7pm/seating by lottery. To live stream visit forum.iop.harvard.edu
